The very first hot air balloon was created in 1783 by brothers Jacques and Joseph Montgolfier. The first hot air balloon was made of fabric that was coated with alum to prevent it from catching on fire. It traveled for eight minutes and carried a chicken, duck and sheep. When the animals survived the trip, the Montgolfier brothers knew they were on to something! Two months later, a military major and a physics professor became the first two people to ever ride in a hot air balloon.

How do hot air balloons fly?

Hot air balloons are very simple in design and use propane fuel to gain altitude. Hot air rises as compared to cold air. This rising hot air, powered by efficiently burning fuel, causes the balloon to lift. More flame makes the balloon go higher, and opening a special valve allows it to descend.

Are hot air balloons safe?

As long as they’re flown by a qualified pilot in good weather, then yes! Today’s companies that offer hot air balloon rides have crews of experienced people who check every aspect of the balloon and the weather before each flight. There’s even a crew on the ground that follows the balloon during the entire flight. To make sure your flight is as safe as it can be, make sure the organization you fly with is qualified, experienced, and knowledgeable by doing a little research or even checking references.

How high do hot air balloons go?

The normal hot air balloon will normally reach around 3,000 feet above ground level. This is what is known as low level flight as compared to other flying vehicles like planes.

How long does a normal hot air balloon ride last?

The average hot air balloon ride lasts around an hour. The distance traveled depends on various factors like piloting and wind conditions.

When is the best time to take a hot air balloon ride?

Cool weather is preferred to hot weather. Also, most pilots prefer to fly either right after dawn or right before dusk. These times offer the best wind conditions for hot air ballooning.

Where can I find out more about hot air balloons?

The best thing to do would be to perform an Internet search. There are many different websites, clubs and organizations devoted to hot air balloons. You can even find the sites of various hot air balloon ride providers in your area and learn all the details about hot air balloons and riding in them.

Hot air balloons are a fun way to take flight! Thousands of balloon enthusiasts take to the skies every year in hot air balloons. If you’re seeking a fun, exciting activity for you and your family or friends, then maybe a hot air balloon ride is just the thing!

One very important part of taking a hot air balloon ride is finding the right company to deal with. There are many different companies out there offering hot air balloon rides at different prices. You will find, however, that the reputable ones all have a few things in common. First of all, the majority of hot air balloon rides are taken right after sunrise. This is because the weather and wind is at its most favorable during these hours. Sometimes, balloon rides are taken right before dusk for the same reason. The pilot who’ll be navigating your balloon should be experienced and qualified. The equipment and balloon you’ll be riding in will be checked and rechecked to ensure maximum safety.

800 Soaring is a website where you can most likely find affordable, quality hot air balloon rides in your local area or very close to it. With almost 200 locations, 25 years experience and 300,000 balloon rides logged, this company is not only affordable, they’re reputable.

If you want to investigate other options, the Internet is the perfect tool to use. By performing a simple search, you’ll be able to find a variety of hot air balloon ride providers in your area. These websites will list contact information and often details like pricing and more information about ballooning and taking a hot air balloon ride. You can even view pictures of hot air balloons on the ground and in flight, and learn more about the history of ballooning.

Another way to find fantastic hot air balloon rides to take is by hanging out on hot air balloon enthusiasts message boards. The members there can not only refer you to great companies to ride with, but they can also fill you in on their own experiences and opinions and let you know more about what to expect.

Your local Yellow Pages can also help you locate a balloon company that’s close to you. You can even talk to friends or family about finding a hot air balloon ride company. Ballooning is becoming very popular these days and more and more people are taking hot air balloon rides.

There are lots of reasons why you might want to take a hot air balloon ride. You might love trying new things and having exciting adventures. You may love heights and be naturally drawn to ballooning. However, many people who try hot air ballooning aren’t like this. If you’re like a lot of people, you’re not so sure about heights. The thought of a hot air balloon ride sounds fun…but a little scary!

Rest assured that a hot air balloon ride is just as safe as a plane ride, car trip, train ride, roller coaster ride, or any other comparable travel. If not more so. Each part of the balloon will be tested and retested before passengers are ever flown. The nylon envelope that forms the balloon is fireproof and sturdy. Passengers ride in a wicker basket that’s designed to hold lots of weight safely yet still be flexible enough to absorb impact upon landing. The baskets do not shake, sway or tip. There’s no chance of falling out — all passengers are completely safe.

Now that safety has been addressed, let’s talk about the fun stuff! Your hot air balloon ride will usually last around an hour. It’s hard to say how far you’ll travel, or where you’ll land! There will be a chase crew on the ground that follows the balloon as it flies. This is not only for safety, but so that the chase crew can meet the passengers on the ground with champagne, transport them to their hotel or other location, and take care of packing up equipment.

So how exactly does a hot air balloon work? Hot air is supplied to the balloon envelope which causes it to rise. This hot air is created by a propane cylinder that uses a series of tubes to transport fuel to the pilot light as well as the valve. When the pilot opens the valve, he can lower the balloon or slow it’s progression. The pilot uses wind direction at different altitudes to carry the balloon horizontally.

Your balloon ride will take place at sunrise. You may wonder, why so early? It’s because the weather and wind are at their most favorable at this time. Dress in comfortable clothes, light layers, and flat soled shoes. Don’t forget a camera, as you’ll definitely want to document your exciting hot air balloon adventure!

Wondering where you can find a hot air balloon ride company in your area? The Internet is a great resource that can help you find providers in your locality. Most websites will offer contact information, pricing, special package deals, and even information about ballooning and sometimes photographs. A lot of sites even let you reserve your trip online! With all the different options available to you, you’re sure to find the perfect hot air balloon ride provider, and have an experience you’ll never forget!
